YOUTH CLINIC: STAFF THANK YOU LETTER

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.  ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Dear Staff,

Thank you for volunteering your time, energy and enthusiasm at this years Marauder Basketball Youth Clinic.  Through your efforts we are able to provide our Belmont community a clinic that promotes Belmont Basketball and teaches our players lessons in sportsmanship, unselfishness and teamwork.  The skills you teach and support you provide are the building blocks for individual and athletic confidence.  Our entire Belmont High School Basketball program owes a debt of gratitude for your commitment to our youth program.

As we all prepare for a day of thanks, I want to share my personal gratitude with you.  Our clinic is a joint effort of the girls and boys basketball programs.  We am proud to be part of this collective spirit.  Coaches from all Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams volunteered their time to work the clinic.

First and foremost I want to thank Coach Tim Stratford for being a loyal coach and director of the clinic.  Any successes our boys teams have experienced are due in large part to his continued leadership and thoughtfulness.  In addition, we had a large group of BHS student athletes who provided our the kids enrgy, enthusiasm and a window into life at BHS.

Secondly, I want to thank Coach Melissa Hart and the entire girls staff for providing incredible instruction and positive energy at each clinic.  We truly had a glimpse of the future leaders of the girls program.  The large number of girl participants was a direct result of their involvement.

Finally, our staff was a unique blend of current BHS coaches and players, an incredible collection of BHS basketball alumni, Belmont Youth Coaches, Community Leaders, and a few basketball junkies (even a professional referee).  We had former high school and college coaches working with former college and pro athletes.   We had 1000 point scorers coaching with players whose valuable roles are fondly remembered by their former coaches, teammates, and those who understand that the universe is not just made of stars.  We had kids, parents and grandparents sharing their love of basketball and family.   Most importantly, we had and yearly maintain a 100% volunteer staff that grows every year-this year we had 74 volunteers!

Special thanks goes out to our lectures:  Tufts Women’s Coach Carla Berube, Salem State Men’s Coach Chris Harvey, and Adidas VP of Basketball (World) Lawrence Norman (BHS 88′) for sharing their talent and experience.  Collectively, they taught everyone at the clinic about basketball and the life lessons which have made them each so successful.

Also, we thank the support of Belmont high school , Belmont Recreation Department, Belmont Youth Basketball Association, along with our friends at Rancatores Ice Cream, Conleys Pub and Grille, the NBA, and Adidas Basketball who donated to the 2012 clinic.  Their generous donations provide fun and excitement, and allow us to promote charitable community programs which support Breast Cancer awareness (Elie Find), Health and Hunger Awareness (Belmont Food Pantry), and community disaster relief (Clothing Drive to support families affected by Hurricane Sandy).

All proceeds from the clinic go to the Marauder Basketball Association.  These clinics continue to provide resources which support our goals of giving back to BHS basketball.  This season we unveiled our new scorers table that was paid for through clinic funds.  Each year we give out senior scholarships and use fundraising  vehicles to provide our players activities which promote and celebrate their achievements.

All of the above cannot happen without the families who sign up and the coaches who volunteer.  We are fortunate to be part of a community that supports high school athletics and loves the game of basketball.  We start our 2012-2013 season on monday and hope to see you all at a game this year.

I want to thank all of you again and wish everyone a fantastic Thanksgiving.
